Reviews of Upstairs Kings Heath
"It's not upstairs and the pictures are not accurate. We were sat in a corner where there was damp coming through on the ceiling (perhaps that is why they've opted for candlelight). Was advised to have focaccia with the lasagna starter because it came with sauce, it did not. My salad was pleasant but not worth the £13 with basic mozzarella. The wait staff were either ok or passive aggressive ( we asked can I have ketchup? Answer no you have aioli on your plate). the duck was so salty is inedible. Even the chocolate and pastry of the profiteroles were salty. We got bored of waiting that we ended going up to the bar to pay. We won't be bothering to go back. It's a shame because the wine is tasty but for £175 for four people (that is sharing desserts and starters) I can find better food and service elsewhere."
"A really nice experience - quiet and hidden away venue with good food and friendly staff. I would like to visit again to try more of their food as their menu changes frequently. I wasn’t drinking, and I’m sure the experience would be very different for someone who could take full advantage of the extensive wine selection and pairings"
"A good hipster restaurant in cool Kings Heath. The location is great, with the road closed this has become a quiet road with lots of outdoor seating and a kind of piazza vibe. The menu is a selection of small plates for £8 to £12 each, and generally 2 plates per person is about right. The menu changes regularly, so is different when you go back sometime later. Check in advance there's something you will like. The food is presented well and very tasty. The puddings are particularly good, or you can have a selection of cheeses from the shop. The bread is freshly baked here and is delicious. There are wines chosen to complement the menu courses. They have a very good selection of wines that can be bought by the glass or bottle. Since only organic wines are sold the prices are expensive at £28 or £35+ a bottle. The staff are friendly and service good, with the owner willing to explain anything you need to know. A meal for 4 with wine and drinks came to £140."
"French conservative cosiness The space that Upstairs @ Grace & James occupies is set up perfectly. It has that French bistro look and feel. The perfect level of interior detail, light levels and comfort. I chose the Vegetarian Sunday Lunch offering, the Roasted Cauliflower. The chef was accommodating, changing out the non-Vegan ingredients. It was packed full of flavour. All ingredients, the greens, the roasts and the cauli, were cooked to perfection. I loved the vegan dessert, the Happy Endings. A vegan ice cream sandwich named the “East side vegan” consisting of Corn and cashew ‘ice-cream’, smokey salted caramel, with lacey miso and corn cookie. Class. Everything was perfect, but I would have loved more."
"Lovely upstairs brunch and lunch spot, overlooking York Road. Simple classic decor, warm and friendly service and absolutely gorgeous food. Probably one of the best brunch places in town right now. Looking forward to trying the Sunday roast dinners!"
