The Pantheon Saloon
The Pantheon Saloon is a historic institution located at 399a Broadway in Skagway, Alaska, United States. Originally built as the Hotel Rosalie during the gold rush, the building was later transformed into a hardware store and then into a saloon in 1903 by John Anderson. The saloon, complete with a bar and slot machines, operated until 1916 when Skagway voted to go dry. The building later served as a museum, restaurant, bakery, and curio shop before being acquired by the National Park Service in 1977. The restoration of the Pantheon Saloon followed the Secretary of the Interior's standards for the treatment of historic properties, focusing on both preservation and rehabilitation. The exterior was restored to its 1903-1916 appearance, while the interior was adapted to house park offices upstairs and modern retail space downstairs. The Red Front building, located next door, was reconstructed based on historical evidence and now serves as museum storage upstairs and leased commercial space downstairs.
