Our town has a rich history, having been established as an Army Air Forces Training Center at the onset of World War II. Though the base officially closed in 1944, its legacy remains, and in the 1950s, the property was opened to the public. Many of the original buildings still stand today, though they have been modernized over the years. The Town Hall itself was originally the Army Headquarters and also served as an elementary school.

The misspelling of the last name was a result of a mistake in the Armed Forces, but the brothers decided to keep the Carlile version for their new venture.
