Splinter Hill Bog Preserve
The Splinter Hill Bog Preserve, located in Bay Minette, Alabama, is a park and tourist attraction known for its diverse habitats and rare plant and animal species. Renamed in 2014 to honor supporter Ruth McClellan Abronski, this preserve is home to some of the largest white-topped pitcher plant bogs in the world. The site, along with the adjacent Forever Wild Preserve, contains intact seepage bog communities and is a haven for rare and declining species. The Nature Conservancy and Alabama's Forever Wild Program are working together to acquire and manage this natural habitat, using prescribed fire and controlling invasive species. Visitors can explore the George W. Folkerts Bog Trail, home to over 12 species of carnivorous plants and rare animals like Bachman’s sparrow and gopher tortoise. The preserve is open dawn to dusk, but may close during prescribed burns. Dress appropriately for wet conditions and be cautious of Eastern cottonmouths in the area. Don't miss the opportunity to see unique plants like Chapman’s butterwort and yellow trumpets, and listen for the songs of summer tanagers and prothonotary warblers during your visit.
