Fort Payne Opera House
β OpenThe Fort Payne Opera House, located at 510 Gault Avenue North in Fort Payne, Alabama, is a historic institution that dates back to 1889. It is the only opera house in the state of Alabama that is still in use today. Originally built during Fort Payne's industrial boom, the Opera House has served as a movie theater, live theater, and public forum over the years. It first opened its doors in September 1890 and was later converted for silent movies before closing in October 1935. In 1969, Landmarks of DeKalb County, Inc. purchased the building and began a renovation and restoration project. The Opera House reopened to the public in 1970 and is now the oldest theater in Alabama located in a building originally constructed for theatrical performances. The institution is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and the National Register of 19th Century Theatres in America. Today, the Opera House still hosts live theatrical events periodically and also houses a Hosiery Museum. Visitors can explore the museum on Fridays from 12pm to 4pm and Saturdays from 10am to 2pm, or by appointment. For more information or to schedule a visit, contact Landmarks of DeKalb County, Inc. at (256) 845-6888.
