About the Business

Welcome to Nara Chalet and Interpretive Center, your gateway to exploring the natural beauty of Houghton, Michigan. Nestled at 501 Nara Loop, our 100-acre Nara Nature Park is a cherished gift from Bob and Ruth Nara to the City of Houghton, offering a serene escape just two miles east of the Michigan Tech University campus. This lush haven connects seamlessly with the extensive Michigan Tech trail system, providing over 50 miles of scenic trails perfect for hiking, running, biking, skiing, and snowshoeing.

Discover the tranquility of the Pilgrim River from our 4,500-foot elevated boardwalk, complete with fishing sites, benches, and convenient kayak and canoe launch access. After the historic 2018 thunderstorm, our boardwalks were meticulously rebuilt to meet modern accessibility standards, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all visitors.

For a unique adventure, take a stroll along the Peepsock Trail, a picturesque 3/4 mile pathway leading to the shores of Portage Lake. The trail entrance is conveniently located just west of the parking area on the north side of US-41 near the bridge.

Our chalet serves as a warm and inviting interpretive center, showcasing the diverse plant species and wildlife that flourish within the park. Open daily from 8 am to 8 pm, the chalet features a cozy fireplace, restrooms with showers, and a concession area. While we do not reserve the chalet for private events, it is a welcoming space for gatherings, provided it remains open to the public and visitors leave it tidy.

Whether you're here for a peaceful walk, an invigorating hike, or simply to enjoy the beauty of nature, Nara Chalet and Interpretive Center offers something for everyone. Plan your visit today and immerse yourself in the natural splendor of Nara Nature Park. For more details, including directions and additional information, please visit our Parks and Rec Page.

"Stopped here on May 3rd 2021. The Chalet says closed till further notice... sad to see such a beautiful building not in use. The trails looked great.... the sign says a shower and sauna is included with your trail pass to Michigan Tech SDC center."

"This was a very nice walk on a boardwalk. We came here when there was still some snow and ice. We saw ducks. It was an interesting area to explore."
