About the Business

Hoosier Prairie

Welcome to Hoosier Prairie, a hidden gem nestled in the heart of Highland, Indiana. Located at coordinates 41 522903, this exceptional park is one of the few remaining grasslands in the Midwest, offering visitors a unique glimpse into the region's natural heritage. Designated as both a State Nature Preserve and a National Natural Landmark in 1977, Hoosier Prairie is a testament to ecological diversity amidst the bustling industry of Northwest Indiana.

Spanning rolling topography and sandy soils, Hoosier Prairie boasts a rich tapestry of habitats that support over 350 native plant species, including 43 that are uncommon or rarely seen in Indiana. Among these are the striking white wild indigo and other prairie treasures like Indian paintbrush and rose pogonia. The preserve is also a haven for wildlife enthusiasts, with opportunities to spot red-headed woodpeckers, sedge wrens, and the delicate eyed brown butterflies. Keep an eye out for the unusual reptiles and amphibians that thrive in the wet prairie "potholes."

Thanks to the dedicated efforts of The Nature Conservancy and a coalition of organizations, Hoosier Prairie has been preserved and protected since 1976. Today, the Indiana Division of Nature Preserves and the U.S. National Park Service manage this invaluable natural resource, continuing vital stewardship work in partnership with the DNR-Lake Michigan Coastal Program, Indiana Heritage Trust, and North America Wetland Conservation Act.

Visitors can easily access Hoosier Prairie by turning east on Main Street from North U.S. 41 toward Griffith. The parking lot is conveniently located on the right side of the road after crossing Kennedy Avenue. Once there, enjoy a pleasant hike along well-developed trails that wind through diverse landscapes, including rare habitats like dry black oak barrens, wetland pools, and wet prairies.

Come explore Hoosier Prairie, where nature's beauty and diversity await you in a serene and captivating setting.
