Sassafras Cottage, one of the oldest structures in the state, dates back to the late 1700s. Originally built by Quaker brothers from the eastern seaboard, the cottage stands as a testament to superior craftsmanship, constructed from local timber amidst the "Ceded Lands" once home to Native American tribes, primarily the Cherokee and Cree. The cottage also holds a fascinating history as the childhood home of Nancy Mills Mercer, co-founder of Mercer University, and as a meeting place for revolutionary figures Col. Elijah Clark and John Dooley during the pivotal Battle of Kettle Creek.
