On March 30, 1892, an impressive gathering of over 1,000 admirers came to Camden to bid farewell to the poet who had touched countless lives. Whitman's mausoleum, designed with his own artistic vision, stands as a testament to his life and legacy. Inspired by William Blake’s etching "Death’s Door," the granite structure is both rugged and majestic, embodying Whitman's spirit.

The mausoleum's construction is a story of dedication, with granite blocks from Quincy, Massachusetts, forming the impressive columns and lintel. Inside, you'll find a serene space inlaid with white marble and red-brown tiles, intended by Whitman to eventually reunite his family in eternity. The pediment bears the simple yet enduring inscription: WALT WHITMAN.
