About the Business

Welcome to St. Peter's Episcopal Churchyard
Nestled in the heart of Philadelphia on South 4th Street, St. Peter's Episcopal Churchyard is a historic sanctuary that has been serving the community for over 250 years. Established in 1761, St. Peter's was originally united with Christ Church and has played a significant role in American history. The church is a testament to the enduring spirit of its community, witnessing the American Revolution, the evolution of the nation, and the vibrant tapestry of Philadelphia's diverse population.
Designed by Scottish architect William Smith, St. Peter's church showcases the mid-Georgian auditory style with classical lines and clear glass windows reflective of the Age of Enlightenment. The church's interior maintains its original eighteenth-century charm, featuring high-backed box pews and a raised pulpit that emphasizes the Word of God. The addition of a tower and steeple in 1842, designed by William Strickland, houses a chime of eight bells cast at London's Whitechapel Foundry, the same foundry that crafted the Liberty Bell.
St. Peter's is not only a place of worship but also a site of historical significance, with many prominent Philadelphians resting in its peaceful churchyard. The church's rich musical heritage is celebrated with its magnificent Rococo organ case and the historic Choir of Men and Boys, now inclusive of all ages and genders.
Committed to its mission of service and sanctuary, St. Peter's actively engages with its community and confronts historical and contemporary issues, including the legacy of racism. The church is dedicated to preserving its historical structure, with ongoing restoration projects and future plans for accessibility improvements and enhancements to its facilities.
Visitors are welcome to explore the church and churchyard, with opening hours from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays, and extended hours until 7 p.m. during summer months. Guided tours are available on weekends, with no reservations necessary, and audio tours can be accessed by phone. Please contact the parish office at 215-925-5968 to confirm tour availability.
Discover the rich history and serene beauty of St. Peter's Episcopal Churchyard, a cherished landmark in Philadelphia's historic landscape.
