About the Business

Welcome to Chattanooga National Cemetery, a solemn and historic site nestled in the heart of Chattanooga, Tennessee. Established on December 25, 1863, by Maj. Gen. George H. Thomas, this national cemetery commemorates the Battles of Chattanooga and stands as a tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of those who served in the armed forces. Located at 1200 Bailey Avenue, the cemetery spans approximately 75 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds, offering a serene final resting place for thousands of veterans and their families.

As both a cemetery and a tourist attraction, Chattanooga National Cemetery invites visitors to explore its rich history and pay their respects to the nearly 10 million veterans remembered through the Veterans Legacy Memorial (VLM) digital platform. This interactive online space allows loved ones and visitors to honor veterans by posting tributes, uploading images, and sharing stories of military service and achievements.

Open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., the cemetery remains closed on federal holidays with the exception of Memorial Day and Veterans Day. Chattanooga National Cemetery provides burial space for both casketed and cremated remains, and eligibility extends to all members of the armed forces who meet service requirements, as well as their spouses, minor children, and under certain conditions, unmarried adult children with disabilities.

Visitors can easily find grave locations using a kiosk located near the administration building, which generates printed maps with the name and grave location of the decedent. The Department of Defense ensures that military funeral honors are provided, with representatives from the veteran's service branch participating in the ceremonies.

To maintain the dignity and beauty of the grounds, the cemetery has specific policies regarding floral arrangements and adornments. Natural flowers are welcomed year-round, while artificial flowers and seasonal decorations are permitted during designated periods. Visitors are reminded that permanent plantings, statues, and breakable objects are not allowed.

Chattanooga National Cemetery is not only a place of reflection and remembrance but also an educational resource, offering materials and information about its historical significance. We invite you to explore this hallowed ground, where the past is honored and the legacy of service continues to inspire future generations. For more details or to arrange a visit, please consult the Education section of our website.

"Beautiful, scenic, and expertly maintained. I stopped here to see the unique monument to the Andrew’s Raiders and made a few stops around the hill admiring the scenic vistas and sobering reminders of history."

"The grounds are always beautifully kept. Thanks to the government for taking care of our soldiers and their families and thank you to all the soldiers for their service past, present, and the future. Thanks to those who have given the ultimate sacrifice. May God bless all those who service."

"Beautiful and inspiring! Personally, these gorgeous cemeteries always remind me of the debt I owe to all those buried there. Without them, our lives would be drastically different. Their resting place should be beautiful and should promote respect and reverence. This cemetery captures the very essence of those feelings. Great place to go pay your respect and beautiful to photograph as well."
