Discover the legendary tale of Ruth Wakefield, who, in a moment of culinary improvisation, invented the iconic chocolate chip cookie right here. Running out of nuts for her cookies, she substituted them with chocolate pieces, expecting them to melt. Instead, they retained their shape, creating a soft, delicious treat that became an instant hit. Wakefield's recipe gained widespread popularity, leading to a partnership with Andrew Nestlé, who printed her recipe on his semi-sweet chocolate packaging in exchange for a lifetime supply of chocolate.
Though The Toll House Inn itself was lost to a fire in 1984, its legacy endures through the Toll House Semi-Sweet Chocolate Morsels introduced by Nestlé in 1939, and the recipe that remains on every bag to this day. Visitors can explore the site marked by a sign and commemorative plaque, honoring this piece of culinary history.
