About the Business

Toes Beach

Welcome to Toes Beach, a cherished gem nestled in the heart of Playa del Rey, Los Angeles, California. Located at 6615 Pacific Avenue, Toes Beach is more than just a park—it's a vibrant community hub steeped in rich history and coastal charm.

In the 1950s and early 1960s, Playa del Rey was celebrated as a premier surfing destination in Los Angeles. Although the surf has changed over the years due to rock jetties designed to prevent beach erosion, the spirit of those early days lives on at Toes Beach. Named by local surfers in 1961, "Toes" refers to the iconic "toes over the nose" surfing maneuver, a nod to the beach's surfing legacy.

The surrounding area, affectionately known as "The Jungle," is a cozy enclave of homes enveloped by lush greenery, exuding a unique charm that locals and visitors alike adore. The small sidewalks and close-knit community atmosphere make it a perfect spot for exploring on foot or by bicycle. A nearby bridge offers a scenic route for bikers, skaters, and joggers, connecting Playa del Rey to the broader Los Angeles coastal pathway.

Toes Beach is not just a place to relax; it's a hub of activity and community spirit. From the long-standing Gillis Volleyball Tournament, which has been a beach staple since 1980, to yoga sessions, drum circles, and community volunteer efforts like Trash Fairies, there's always something happening. These events and initiatives reflect the community's dedication to preserving the beach's natural beauty and fostering a welcoming environment for all.

Historically significant, Playa del Rey was the site of the first dredged harbor attempt in Santa Monica Bay in the 1870s. Though nature had other plans, the area transformed into the Playa Del Rey Lagoon and eventually became the beloved regional public park it is today.

Whether you're drawn by the historical allure, the vibrant community, or the serene beauty of the coast, Toes Beach invites you to experience the quintessential beach lifestyle. Come join us and become part of our story, where the legacy of the past meets the vibrant pulse of today.

"Greer beach but to many idiots fishing from the sand so you have to watch for their fishing lines if you try and take a stroll or run along the water , where are the police or life guards ? Other than that I would have given it 5 stars"

"Arrived just after sunset. The sky line was orange, white and blue to black with a partial moon. Just listening to the waves and enjoying the effect of the negative ions was wonderful. I was an LA native born & raised in LA. Moved to Phoenix 2 years ago. The only things I missed about it were the beaches and my friends. With I could bring it back with me when I go home."

"As a local, I’ve loved this stretch of trail and sand as home base! It’s tucked away behind a well-to-do Playa Del Rey neighborhood, has amenities of the more crowded beach parks without the crowds and it’s located by Playa’s Lagoon Park. I can park for free around the park, meet friends and family and have the park, beach and bike trails for activities, all while enjoying the ocean air and awesome views! I’m thinking hang ten with the name, yet with the jetties now in place to help protect the harbor of Marina Del Rey and the ecosystem of Ballona Creek, surfing stunts are not as likely here now, as it was in the early sixties. It’s great for kids with parents to go wading, swimming or relaxing with floatation devices on the calmer waters. There’s also lifeguards looking out to ensure safety! Now it can said that we dip our feet in the water, toes in the sand! The beach and ocean are fairly clean, tho some of the public areas are trashed early on, on the weekends and holidays. Visitors may include vagrants, who may be here loitering, tho usually few and far between and not so much a problem as other beaches. There’s public restrooms at Lagoon Park and at Toes Beach. Toes Beach can be accessed from Lagoon Park, just over the dunes along Pacific Avenue, or from the west end of Culver Blvd or just over the dunes along Pacific Ave."

"This is our best spot viewing sunset in the neighborhood of Playa Vista. There are not too many people and very peaceful."
