About the Business

Welcome to Porter Family Picnic Area

Nestled within the serene beauty of The Forest of Nisene Marks State Park, the Porter Family Picnic Area offers a tranquil retreat for families and nature enthusiasts alike. Located just four miles north of Aptos on Aptos Creek Road in Aptos, California, this picturesque area is a perfect escape from the bustling towns and beaches along Highway 1 near Santa Cruz.

Discover the Beauty of Nature

The Forest of Nisene Marks is renowned for its dense second- and third-growth redwood forests, rising from near sea level to the steep coastal mountains. Visitors can enjoy picnicking near the calming Aptos Creek or explore over 30 miles of trails ideal for hiking, jogging, or biking. The park is a testament to forest regeneration, showcasing rugged canyons and remnants of its historical railroad and logging industry.

Important Visitor Information

A forest health and fuel reduction project is scheduled from mid-July 2024 through December 2024, which may cause occasional trail and road closures during weekdays. For your safety, please adhere to all posted signs and directions from on-site project staff. The project aims to enhance emergency access, improve forest health, and prepare the area for prescribed fire to reduce fuel loads and boost biodiversity.

Recreational Opportunities

- Guided Hikes & Programs: Explore our guided hikes and public programs by visiting our Parks Events page.

- Bicycles & Dogs: Bicycles and dogs are welcome on Aptos Creek Fire Road and select trails. Dogs must be on a leash no longer than six feet.

- Horses: Horseback riding is permitted on designated trails below the steel bridge.

- Volunteer Opportunities: Join the Nisene Marks Volunteer Trail Crew every third Sunday of the month to help maintain the park’s beauty.

Park Guidelines

- Fees: A vehicle day-use fee of $8 applies. Discounted rates are available for seniors, and bus parking fees vary.

"Starting point for various trails, including the one that goes to Maple Falls. It is possible to get here by car. Driving past winter gate is narrow dirt road, which made me feel like I'm trespassing but it is legitimate path for visitor's cars."
