"A very painful and costly $45,000.00 mistake. I was referred to Dr. Paz from my prosthodontist. The first thing I told Dr. Paz was that I had 5 dental implants and they, in total, cost me $50,000. I did not want to do anything to jeopardize them. He assured me Invisalign was safe and told me the computer generates trays that move the teeth around the implants. The implants I had in my mouth were placed between 2011 and 2018. I had zero problems with them until I was in the middle of using the Invisalign. About 9 or 10 months into treatment, one of the gums around a lower molar implant (#30) began bleeding. Dr. Paz told me I could see my periodontist or I could “just press on it”. I, being naive, actually took that as medical advice. A few months later, it turns out that the bone was eroded from infection and I lost the implant. I had no intention of returning to see Dr. Paz, but my prosthodontist suggested I return to finish my treatment. As I trusted my prosthodontist (he had made my 5 implant crowns), I returned to Dr. Paz to continue treatment. I was absolutely enraged when Dr. Paz attempted to gaslight me by saying he had concerns about #30 when I started treatment. I assured him that I would have never commenced treatment if he had expressed concerns about any of my implants. He then showed me his computer screen which showed a note about #30, which happened, oddly enough, to be a different color on the screen than any of the previous notes (as if it had been added at a later date). He then gave me a creepy, awkward hug before I left. A few months later, my gum around another implant started bleeding. I threw away the trays and ran to my periodontist. Unfortunately, the bone was also eroded by infection and I lost another implant (#14). Implant #30 was placed in 2014 and implant #14 had been placed in 2015. These impacts were fine and stable until Invisalign treatment. It’s been suggested to me that wearing the trays 22 hours a day trap bacteria, thereby creating an infection and eroding the bone, which creates the loss of the implant. This has been an incredibly painful, time consuming effort in removing the implants and replacing them. I lost an investment of $20,000, replacing them almost a decade later with inflation is over $20,000 plus the $5,000 I spent on Invisalign- totaling $45,000.00 +. I’ve considered suing but there is really no recourse if you cannot conclusively prove causation. I should have known better to employ this man’s services. The facility operates like a factory, with assistants doing the majority of the work, with Dr. Paz stopping by for all of 2 minutes to check in at the appointment. He never inquired if I was up-to-date in my dental cleanings, which, if he had any actual care in the process, would have impressed upon me how important 90 day check-ups with my periodontist were throughout the process…which may or may not have saved those implants. I used retainer cleaner every single day and I have excellent flossing and brushing habits. In the end, I don’t think anything could have made up for the fact that those trays are trapping bacteria. Be aware that you sign away your rights to any recourse for issues or dental treatments you need when you agree to proceed with Invisalign. If I could have, I would have sued him for gross negligence and malpractice."
