About the Business

Welcome to Leo Carrillo - Staircase Parking Lot, your convenient gateway to the stunning Leo Carrillo State Park. Nestled at 40000 Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu, California, our parking facility offers easy access to the park's diverse natural attractions, just 28 miles northwest of Santa Monica along the iconic Highway 1.

Leo Carrillo State Park is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, featuring 1.5 miles of pristine beach perfect for swimming, surfing, windsurfing, and surf fishing. Explore the enchanting tide pools, coastal caves, and reefs, or enjoy a leisurely walk among the giant sycamores shading our main campgrounds. Adventure awaits in the park's backcountry, where you can discover the former ranch landscape and the serene stock pond at the Nicholas Flat Natural Preserve.

Our parking lot provides the ideal starting point for your visit, whether you're here for a day trip or an extended camping adventure. During the summer, the park hosts Junior Rangers and campfire programs, while educational school field trips are available throughout the academic year.

Named in honor of Leo Carrillo, an esteemed actor, preservationist, and conservationist, the park reflects his dedication to California's natural beauty. Carrillo's legacy includes his influential role in the state's acquisition of the Hearst property at San Simeon.

Please note our firewood policy: Only burn firewood, Duraflame, and charcoal briquettes in designated fire rings when fire levels permit. Check the entrance kiosk for daily fire level updates. For your convenience, the park features token-operated showers, with machines accepting only one-dollar bills.

Dogs on a leash are welcome in the park's day-use areas, campground, and north beach (north of lifeguard tower 3), though they are not permitted on backcountry trails or the south beach (south of lifeguard tower 3).

For special events, weddings, filming, photography permits, and educational programs, please reach out to our dedicated contacts. Whether you're planning a family outing or a peaceful retreat, Leo Carrillo - Staircase Parking Lot is your first step towards a memorable experience at Leo Carrillo State Park.

"Dog friendly beach. A steep climb down, but doable. Better to park in the lot south of here off the beach access road."

"Great place to park to get access to a dog friendly beach. You do have to climb down some stairs and a rocky path but it's not long. The beach has a lot of rocks, which may be a problem for some, but my kids loved climbing on them. And the beach has so many cool shells to check out!!! There were a handful of people coming and going, but I wouldn't say it was crowded by any means on a weekday in April."

"My favorite beach. Free park on street. Look for access trails going down. Somewhat worn and needs repair so don’t trip! No frills beach, no porta potties. No nothing but sand waves sky and sun. Dogs okay but need the leash. I quietly give mine some free leash time. Pay park lot also open"

"The parking lot is a little hard to find but it is a decent size. It's a little rough but it's definitely better than no parking lot. The trail that goes from the lot to the beach is also a bit too narrow, especially if you are walking down there with dog(s) in hand and your beach gear."

"I very nice little beach with firm damp sand for your pet to enjoy. The small parking lot has a port-a-loo and you need to pay parking at the machine and display the receipt on your dashboard before heading down. The machine takes Visa & MasterCard. It costs $8 for the day so it's cheap. The path down to the beach is most assuredly NOT wheelchair accessible. It's a challenging little switch-back trail with a tricky step at the end. Plus you need to transverse some seaside rocks to reach the beach area. I posted a video of the path. It's a great way to get your exercise!"
