About the Business

Welcome to The Forest of Nisene Marks State Park

Nestled just four miles north of Aptos on Aptos Creek Road, The Forest of Nisene Marks State Park is a hidden gem and a refreshing retreat from the bustling towns and beaches along Highway 1 near Santa Cruz, California. This captivating park sprawls across a dense redwood forest, rising from near sea level to the steep coastal mountains, offering a unique semi-wilderness experience for nature enthusiasts and adventurers alike.

Explore the Beauty and History

With over 30 miles of trails, visitors can hike, jog, or bike through breathtaking landscapes, including rugged canyons and the remnants of a once-thriving railroad and logging industry. The park stands as a monument to forest regeneration, showcasing a landscape that has beautifully healed from past logging activities. A preserved grove of ancient old-growth redwoods near the Pourroy picnic area adds to the park's historical charm.

- Trail Access: Bicycles and dogs (on leashes) are allowed on designated trails, including the Aptos Creek Fire Road and four hike-and-bike trails. Horses are welcome on specific trails below the steel bridge. Please check trail access rules to ensure a safe and enjoyable visit.

- No Camping or Fires: Currently, there is no camping allowed in the park, and fires are prohibited to maintain the park's natural beauty and safety.

Forest Health and Fuel Reduction Project

From mid-July 2024 through December 2024, a forest health and fuel reduction project will take place along the upper portions of Aptos Creek Fire Road. This initiative aims to improve emergency access during wildfires and enhance forest health and biodiversity. Please note that trails and roads in the project area may close occasionally during weekdays for visitor safety.

"Awesome place with great views. I love coming here for summer hikes because the area is full of shade regardless of what trail you are on. Theres plenty of picnic areas and trails that are easy to fairly difficult to complete. My favorite trail is Moses Spring Trail to Maple Falls, this is a there and back trail with some challenging areas. Not sure if the trail is accessible year round because some of the hike goes through the creek but it was fairly nice in the summer! Park fee is only $8 for day use."

"Nestled in the Santa Cruz Mountains, The Forest of Nisene Marks offers a dense and serene escape. Towering redwoods crowd the trails, creating a cool, quiet canopy overhead. The rushing Aptos Creek adds a soundtrack to your hike, and the park itself feels wonderfully secluded. Be prepared for a bit of a drive to reach this natural wonderland, but the tranquility you find amidst the dense trees is well worth the journey."

"I arrived here in the morning and followed the Aptos-Rancho Trail to the Terrace Trail. Along the way, I encountered a single tree bridge, which needed extra caution as I was with my child. Despite the challenge, it was an enjoyable experience!"
