"Marco Island was a hidden gem for me. I was in awe of the number of shells we saw on South Beach on Marco Island in Florida. When planning our trip to the southwestern part of Florida, I had a lengthy list of places to see. High up on the list were the 10,000 islands that lie just to the south of Naples, FL. Most of these islands are only accessible by boat or kayak. But the largest one, Marco Island, could be reached by car. On our first trip to the island. we opted to explore South Beach. Although the beach didn’t have the pristine white silky smooth sand that you like to feel between your toes, the one thing it did have was shells…lots and lots of shells. Beaches on Marco Island might not have the clean, pristine sand, but it had more shells than I have ever seen in my life. I’m not talking bout a beach generously littered with shells. I’m talking about piles and piles of shells. There were so many…If didn’t know better, I would have suspected they hauled in truck loads of shells to dump on the beach. In some areas of the beach, it was hard to see the sand for the piles of shells. Instead of walking the beach looking for that perfect shell, at the tip of South Beach you dig through the piles of shells…sorting the common shells from the rare. You literally could shovel the shells as if they were dirt at the most southern point of the island. There is parking near by the beach’s public assess on Swallow Avenue for $8 all day but spaces are limited. If you are a Collier County resident, you can park for free if you have the Collier County Beach Parking Sticker. A free sticker reserved for county residents can be obtained at the public library on Marco Island and at various other places in the county."
