About the Business

Cedar Keys National Wildlife Refuge

Welcome to Cedar Keys National Wildlife Refuge, a breathtaking sanctuary located in Cedar Key, Florida. This unique refuge offers visitors an opportunity to connect with nature and explore diverse ecosystems teeming with wildlife. Whether you're paddling a kayak, taking a tour boat, or renting a vessel, reaching these stunning islands is an adventure in itself.

Open from sunrise to sunset, the refuge invites you to explore its open areas, including all of Atsena Otie Key and the sandy beaches of the other islands. Please note that interior and vegetated areas on several keys are closed to protect the habitat, with access permitted only by special permit.

For those planning a visit in October, don't miss the Seahorse Key Cedar Keys Light Station Open Houses on October 14th from 9 AM to 3 PM and October 19th from 11 AM to 5 PM, coinciding with the Seafood Fest. Check our events page for more details.

The refuge is a haven for birdwatchers, with species such as egrets, night herons, brown pelicans, white ibis, cormorants, reddish egrets, and roseate spoonbills calling it home. At one time, 200,000 birds nested here, and while the numbers have decreased, the refuge remains a vital habitat for around 20,000 birds.

Visitors are encouraged to plan their trip during the milder fall, winter, or spring months. Remember to bring sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, and a refillable water bottle. For tour guides and boat rental information, please visit the Cedar Key Chamber of Commerce website.

Join us in our mission to conserve, protect, and enhance the natural beauty and wildlife of this extraordinary refuge. Whether through volunteerism or by becoming a member of our Friends group, your involvement will deepen your connection to the natural world.

Embark on an unforgettable journey at Cedar Keys National Wildlife Refuge, where nature's wonders await.

"Paddled out to the refuge yesterday to try and walk back to the graveyard. Unfortunately, the island us still pretty torn up from the last hurricane. Trees down, the wood walkway over the marsh was completely gone. However, know that the boating around the island itself is still a beautiful and enjoyable 2 to 3 hour leisurely trip."

"Loved walking the boardwalk by the cemetary. Beautiful water views & a park at the end of it."
