About the Business

Lake Julia Preserve

Welcome to Lake Julia Preserve, a serene haven for nature enthusiasts nestled in the foothills of the western Adirondack Mountains in Remsen, New York. Located on Roberts Road, this stunning park and tourist attraction offers a unique opportunity to explore a rich tapestry of mature northern hardwood forests, pristine streams, and sparkling lakes. Managed by The Nature Conservancy, the preserve is a living classroom for ecological teaching and research, frequented by faculty and students from Utica College's Department of Biology.

Established in 1976 through the generous donation of Cynthia Anne Gibson, whose family cherished this land since the late 1800s, Lake Julia Preserve has continued to evolve. In 2008, a dedicated Eagle Scout developed a two-mile loop trail, enhancing accessibility and offering visitors a more immersive experience in nature. This trail, open year-round from dawn to dusk, is perfect for hiking, bird watching, nature study, and cross-country skiing.

As you wander through the preserve, you'll encounter a diverse array of wildlife, from beavers and snapping turtles to black bears and white-tailed deer. The area is also a birdwatcher's paradise, home to 143 confirmed bird species, including the majestic great horned owl and the vibrant Blackburnian warbler. The landscape is equally captivating, featuring untouched hardwood forests dominated by sugar maple, interspersed with red maple, beech, birch, and some of the region's finest black cherry trees.

Lake Julia Preserve is more than just a natural retreat; it is a vital ecological bridge between the Tug Hill Plateau and the Adirondack Park. In collaboration with partners like the NYS Department of Transportation and the Tug Hill Tomorrow Land Trust, The Nature Conservancy is committed to preserving this critical area for future generations.

Whether you're a seasoned naturalist or simply seeking a peaceful escape, Lake Julia Preserve promises a rewarding and enriching experience. Please remember to stay on established trails and exercise caution on bridges, as they may be slippery. While exploring, let the tranquility of this primeval forest inspire and refresh you.

"Nice natural trail. Well marked and maintained. I did a loop that was about 4K. Really great place to walk my dogs. Note, there is no parking area. You just need to see the trailhead (Google does a good job at getting you there), then pull off the road."

"10/13/2023 My dog, Odin & I explored this trail system today….perfect autumn day! We parked in space off Roberts Rd in Remsen NY… crossed the road and began our hike on this well marked and well taken care of “Gibson Nature Trail”! The entire trail is wide (except for the part that dead ends at a posted lake/camp) There are a few nice foot bridges over tiny “streams ”, the water in these streams are amazingly crystal clear….BEAUTIFUL!! So peaceful, quiet, clean and WELL KEPT!! MANY THANKS TO THE GIBSON FAMILY FOR LEAVING THIS FOR EVERYONE TO ENJOY AND TO THE BOY SCOUT WHO WORKED ON IT! JOB VERY WELL DONE!!❤️❤️ I HAD NO IDEA OF HOW HUGE THIS ENTIRE NATURE PRESERVE WAS!! We will be coming back….ALOT!!!"

"I walked these trails last weekend. Great walk. It took 2 hours to cover about five and a half miles. Only slight elevation grades. I plan to return for cross-country skiing"
