About the Business

Pine Neck Sanctuary

Welcome to Pine Neck Sanctuary

Nestled along the picturesque Shinnecock Bay coastline in East Quogue, New York, Pine Neck Sanctuary offers a serene escape into nature's beauty. This 77-acre oasis is one of the rare spots where the pine barrens stretch all the way to Long Island’s South Shore, providing a unique and tranquil environment for visitors.

Explore Our Trails

Our sanctuary features a marked trail system, a scenic 2.4-mile loop that takes approximately an hour to hike. As you traverse through lush forests and skirt along salt marshes, you'll end up at a stunning viewpoint overlooking the north side of Shinnecock Bay. Whether you're an avid hiker, a passionate birdwatcher, or a photography enthusiast, Pine Neck Sanctuary is the perfect destination for you.

Rich in History and Natural Beauty

Once the waterfront estate of Zoe Van Wyck DeRopp, who generously donated 12 acres to The Nature Conservancy in 1972, Pine Neck Sanctuary has grown in size and significance. An additional acreage was acquired in 2000 through a collaborative effort between Southampton Town and The Nature Conservancy, enhancing its natural charm and accessibility.

Part of the Bay to Bay Trail

Pine Neck Sanctuary is a proud segment of Southampton Town’s renowned Bay to Bay Trail. This trail begins at Squiretown Park along the Peconic Bay and winds its way south, culminating at our sanctuary along Shinnecock Bay. It’s a journey that offers diverse landscapes and breathtaking views.

Plan Your Visit

Open from dawn to dusk, seven days a week, Pine Neck Sanctuary welcomes visitors to explore its natural wonders. Please note, for the safety and preservation of our wildlife, dogs and other pets are not permitted. A parking lot is available but limited to six vehicles. For large group visits, please contact the East Hampton field office at 631-329-3981.

Wildlife and Birdwatching

Pine Neck Sanctuary is a haven for birdwatchers, offering year-round opportunities to spot a variety of bird species. From migratory waterfowl and marsh-nesting birds to vibrant songbirds and majestic raptors, the preserve's diverse habitats support a rich array of wildlife. Bring your binoculars and immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of nature.

"If you are looking for a casual weekend stroll this isn’t it. My friend and I went here yesterday. The beginning of the trail started with us being aggressively bitten by mosquitos. As we continued our journey the trail narrowed and we started to feel a bit claustrophobic. The anxiety really hit when we heard animals rustling in the brush and the crows started loudly cawing. The trail isn’t well manicured but we just wanted to get out of there so we began running. Finally we came to an opening and were pleasantly surprised to walk a wide grassy path which led to a small beach. We enjoyed the view until we realized there was no continuation of the trail and had to turn back. We then found ourselves on what seemed like private property of an old house or barn. Scared to go back through the woods which we just came from we ultimately decided to follow the driveway and take the car path back to the street. Overall it felt like a place where someone would dump a dead body and our shrills were something you would have heard in a horror movie. Much prefer Quogue Wildlife Refuge."

"Seems like it would be nice in the late fall or winter. Be wary in the summertime. Lots of mosquitoes and ticks. Be prepared."

"Very nice trek with walking trails, small road, marsh, and a beach. I’d wear some comfy boots if you want to enter the marsh. Binoculars are a plus very beautiful views."
