Ruth Oliva Preserve at Dam Pond

Explore the Natural Beauty of Ruth Oliva Preserve at Dam Pond

Welcome to the Ruth Oliva Preserve at Dam Pond, a breathtaking park and tourist attraction nestled at 10580 New York 25, East Marion, New York. This serene preserve offers a stunning natural escape throughout the year, even during the tranquil winter months. Whether you're an avid birdwatcher or simply seeking a refreshing walk, Ruth Oliva Preserve promises a delightful experience.

Birdwatcher's Paradise

Bring your binoculars and immerse yourself in the diverse avian life that calls this preserve home. In the winter, keep an eye out for waterfowl such as buffleheads, horned grebes, and red-breasted mergansers as they settle in this crucial wintering spot on the East End. Explore the trails and see what feathered friends you can discover. [Click here for a trail map of the preserve.]

A Legacy of Conservation

The Ruth Oliva Preserve is part of a 118-acre collection of land dedicated to conservation, thanks to the collaborative efforts of the Peconic Land Trust, Suffolk County, Southold Town, local landowners, and partner organizations like the Oysterponds Historical Society. The preserve honors Ruth Oliva, a dedicated advocate for preservation in Southold since the 1970s. Her tireless efforts and commitment to the area around Dam Pond were instrumental in its conservation, and the preserve was renamed in her honor in September 2010.

Jointly Managed and Rich in Trails

Managed by Suffolk County and the Town of Southold, the preserve offers a network of beautiful trails for exploration. Whether you're visiting for a peaceful walk or to learn more about the area's natural history, the preserve's trails provide a wonderful opportunity to connect with nature. [Click here for a trail map.]

Acknowledging Indigenous Heritage

The Peconic Land Trust recognizes that Long Island, known as Paumanake/Sewanhacky, is the ancestral territory of many Indigenous communities. We honor their stewardship of the land for over 10,000 years and accept our responsibility to protect their cultural and traditional connections to the land.

Supporting Conservation Efforts

Please note that while the Peconic Land Trust raises its operating budget through charitable gifts and professional services, the 2% real estate transfer tax goes directly to the Town where the property is purchased. This tax contributes to the Peconic Bay Region Community Preservation Fund, supporting ongoing conservation efforts.

Plan your visit to the Ruth Oliva Preserve at Dam Pond and experience the tranquility and natural beauty that this unique destination has to offer.
