About the Business

Welcome to Battery Turnbull, a historic landmark nestled within the Gateway National Recreation Area at Fort Wadsworth, Staten Island, New York. Situated on South Weed Road, under the iconic Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, Battery Turnbull is a captivating reminder of America's rich military history.

Constructed between 1902 and 1904, Battery Turnbull was an integral part of the Endicott System of Coastal Defenses, a series of fortifications designed to protect the United States' coastlines. Originally equipped with six M1902 3-inch guns, which were later replaced by M1903 guns in 1913, this battery served as a critical defensive position until its deactivation in 1945.

Visitors to Battery Turnbull can explore the remnants of this fascinating military installation, which, along with its neighboring batteries, replaced the Civil War-era South Cliff Battery. Although no guns remain, the structure offers a unique glimpse into the past and the evolution of coastal defenses.

For those interested in military history and breathtaking views, Battery Turnbull provides an accessible and enriching experience. While visiting, you can also explore nearby Battery Bacon and enjoy the natural beauty of the Gateway National Recreation Area.

Whether you're a history enthusiast or simply seeking a peaceful spot to appreciate the scenic surroundings, Battery Turnbull at Fort Wadsworth is a must-visit destination. Discover the stories etched into its walls and imagine the pivotal role it once played in safeguarding our shores.

"Lovely walkway offering some amazing views of the Verrazzano-Narrows bridge. Great place to walk, jog, bike or just enjoy the views. Convenient and free parking just down (or up) the hill near the Battery Hudson area."

"A beautiful place to have a good time, see the historical landscape and have breathtaking views of Manhattan and Verrazano Bridge. This place is something you must see on Staten Island. Unfortunately, the Fort is not open to the public. You can’t get inside, but you can enjoy and explore the spectacular structure even by just taking a look from outside. There are several big free public parking lots near. I recommend taking a camera with you because these photos will have an unforgettable effect."
