About the Business

Herkimer History Volunteers

Welcome to Herkimer History Volunteers

Located at 406 North Main Street, Herkimer, New York, Herkimer History Volunteers is a unique blend of library, museum, and tourist attraction dedicated to preserving and sharing the rich history of Herkimer County. Our mission, since 1896, has been the discovery, collection, preservation, and publication of historical records and artifacts related to the area formerly known as Tryon and later Herkimer County.

Explore Our Collections

Our extensive collection includes books, newspapers, pamphlets, maps, genealogies, portraits, paintings, relics, manuscripts, letters, journals, surveys, and field books. These materials illustrate the history and growth of Herkimer County in terms of population, wealth, education, agriculture, arts, manufacturing, and commerce. Our museum offers a fascinating glimpse into the past with displays of historical artifacts that tell the story of the region.

Plan Your Visit

We welcome visitors by appointment on Sundays and are closed on most Federal Holidays. Please call ahead to confirm our availability or to schedule a special visit. For those unable to visit in person, we offer online services. Research inquiries can be emailed to herkimerhistoryresearch@yahoo.com, and members enjoy complimentary research requests.

Support Our Mission

As a nonprofit organization, we rely on the generosity of our community. You can support us through memberships, donations, or by purchasing items from our online Gift Shop. Membership offers numerous benefits and helps us continue our mission of protecting and preserving Herkimer County's history. Donations can also be made via the PayPal "Donate" button on our website.

Recycling for a Cause

Help us by donating your bottles and cans at the Mohawk Valley Redemption Center in Ilion (401 E. Main Street). Simply mention they are for the “Herkimer County Historical Society” when you drop them off. Your contributions make a significant impact, and we appreciate your support.

Thank you for helping us preserve the past for future generations. We look forward to welcoming you to Herkimer History Volunteers!

"I don't recall this in the guidebook, but it was well worth the stop. For those cycling the Erie Canal Trail, this should be a 'must'. Upstairs was a high-wheel bike that was ridden across the country. (The first?). Beautiful architecture, nice museum, inexpensive souvenirs. The ride to the musem brought you past many beautiful, old buildings. Loved it."
