"Had a CD that matured while my husband was ill. They rolled it over to a lower interest CD. Less than 3 weeks later, my spouse died. They wanted a $4,000 penalty to cash it out. I said but he died and I had no control. I asked to speak to the manager who informed me that UCB paid higher rates, ergo they would penalize me on my husband's death...on the back of a widow. All 4 other local banks did NOT penalize with the loss of interest upon a spouse's death. I will be there the morning this CD matures and getting out of this bank for good. I do believe I will contact the Commissioner of Banking for NJ. How does one bank get away with this and the others have no such policy. Death is uncontrollable and to take advantage of widows at the worst time ever is ungodly. Beware, folks!"

"I took out a one year certificate that pays interest at maturity. I go to the bank one year later to find out they made the account dormant. I ask how that could be since I was in the bank last year and I had a one year certificate. Bank response I don't know the computer does it."
