About the Business

Sheep Meadow

Welcome to Sheep Meadow, a serene oasis nestled within the bustling heart of Manhattan. Located at 1802 East 65th Street, Sheep Meadow is a beloved 15-acre lawn in Central Park, offering a lush retreat from the urban hustle and bustle. This iconic landscape is perfect for relaxing, sunbathing, reading, and picnicking, all while enjoying the breathtaking contrast between the verdant park and the towering skyline of New York City.

Originally designed to provide visitors with a pastoral escape, Sheep Meadow once hosted a flock of sheep that grazed the lawn, maintaining its country charm and keeping the grass neatly trimmed. Though the sheep have long since moved on, the meadow continues to captivate park-goers with its expansive beauty and historical significance.

In the mid-20th century, Sheep Meadow became known for hosting large events, from concerts to political demonstrations. However, decades of overuse led to significant wear, prompting the Central Park Conservancy to restore the meadow in the 1980s, revitalizing this cherished green space for future generations.

Whether you're a local New Yorker or a first-time visitor, Sheep Meadow offers an idyllic setting for leisure and recreation. As part of Central Park's diverse landscapes, it stands as a testament to the park's essential purpose as a refuge from city life. We invite you to explore this tranquil haven, contribute to its upkeep, and become part of the community that cherishes and preserves Central Park.

Join us in keeping this vital public treasure vibrant and beautiful by considering a donation, membership, or volunteering with the Central Park Conservancy. Your support ensures that Sheep Meadow and the entire park remain a cherished sanctuary for all who visit.

"An ideal place to share with family and friends with an exquisite picnic. It has a spectacular view of the city of Manhattan. I suggest checking the weather a day before and meeting between 2 and 7pm."

"Best hidden gem in Central Park. Perfect spot on a Saturday for a picnic or a stroll. Always very lively and the lawn is very manicured. Definitely recommend checking it out, if you live in NYC or if you’re visiting!"

"I love this meadow because of the quick access to it. A few steps from the south side and you can reach the place easily. The place is usually crowded with people out on picnics. However it's still nice to relax, soak the sun with the view of the skyline of the billionaire row. The park definitely makes the city saner to live."
