Alice in Wonderland

Discover the Magic of Alice in Wonderland at Central Park

Nestled in the enchanting landscape of Central Park, at the northern end of Conservatory Water on East 74th Street, Manhattan, New York, lies one of the park's most beloved treasures: the Alice in Wonderland sculpture. This captivating bronze artwork invites both the young and young-at-heart to step into a world of whimsy and imagination.

Commissioned by philanthropist George Delacorte as a heartfelt tribute to his late wife, Margarita, this enchanting sculpture was brought to life by Spanish-American sculptor José de Creeft. Inspired by the original illustrations from Lewis Carroll's classic 1865 tale, the sculpture features Alice and her kitten, Dinah, perched atop a giant mushroom, surrounded by the unforgettable characters of Wonderland — the Cheshire Cat, Mad Hatter, Dormouse, and White Rabbit. The face of Alice was modeled after de Creeft's daughter, Donna Maria, while the Mad Hatter bears the likeness of Delacorte himself.

The surrounding terraced landscape, designed by Hideo Sasaki & Associates, stands as a rare example of modern landscape architecture within Central Park, offering a serene setting for reflection and play. Since its unveiling in May 1959, the sculpture has been a beacon of joy, with generations of children clambering up its surface, echoing the playful spirit of its dedication ceremony.

Managed by the Central Park Conservancy, which tirelessly works to restore, preserve, and maintain the park's historic features, your visit supports the ongoing stewardship of this vital public treasure. Whether exploring the park's hidden paths, capturing its beauty through photography, or simply enjoying a peaceful stroll, the Alice in Wonderland sculpture stands as a testament to the enduring magic of art and nature.

Join us in celebrating this iconic symbol of childhood wonder and contribute to keeping Central Park vibrant and beautiful. Visit Alice in Wonderland and let your imagination take flight.
