About the Business

Nutter's Battery

Welcome to Nutter's Battery: A Journey Through Time

Nestled within the iconic Central Park, Nutter's Battery offers visitors a captivating glimpse into New York City's storied past. Located at West Drive in Manhattan, this historic tourist attraction provides a unique blend of natural beauty and rich history, making it a must-visit destination for locals and tourists alike.

Nutter's Battery is a scenic overlook that boasts sweeping views of the Harlem Meer, providing a serene escape from the city's hustle and bustle. This site is steeped in history, originally constructed as a fort by the British army in 1776 during the Revolutionary War. It was later fortified by New Yorkers during the War of 1812 to defend against potential British attacks. Named after local landowner Valentine Nutter, the fort was part of a larger defensive system, which included Fort Clinton and Fort Fish, connected by earthen walls and a gatehouse at McGowan’s Pass.

While the anticipated battles never occurred, and the forts fell into ruin, Nutter's Battery remains a testament to the area's strategic significance. In 1945, the Parks Department laid new paths and marked the historic site with a stone wall, which was beautifully restored by the Central Park Conservancy in 2014.

Visitors to Nutter's Battery can step into history and explore an area frequented by General George Washington and other notable figures. Discover how glaciers, cow manure, and the Revolutionary War played pivotal roles in shaping what would become Central Park. Delve into the area's rich past with fascinating insights from Conservancy Historian Emerita Sara Cedar Miller’s new book.

Help preserve the beauty and vibrancy of Central Park by making a gift to the Central Park Conservancy today. Your support ensures that Nutter's Battery and other historic sites remain accessible and enchanting for future generations.

Come and explore Nutter's Battery—where history and nature converge in the heart of New York City.

"The view over the Harlem Meer is pleasant in good weather but the remains are a very modest stone foundation. Unless you are a fanatical architectural historian, this is not worth a trip - although perfectly nice to enjoy if you stumble on it."

"This is another neat stop in Central Park turn the left to be natural so there's not a whole lot to do other than say you were there and take a couple pictures but it's something to see and feel and you can think back to the past on the people that were there interesting spot"
