About the Business

Welcome to the Webster Library, a cornerstone of the community located at 1465 York Avenue, Manhattan, New York. As one of the oldest libraries in New York City, our history dates back to 1893, when we were first established as the Webster Free Library. Thanks to the generous contributions of Charles B. Webster and Andrew Carnegie, our current site stands proudly at the intersection of 78th Street and York Avenue.
At Webster Library, we offer a wealth of resources and activities for all ages. Whether you're here for books, Wi-Fi, computer access, or to participate in one of our many classes or programs, there's something for everyone. Please note that our second floor closes 15 minutes before the building's closing time.
Explore our diverse range of services, including the new Shelf Help program—where our librarians handpick five books tailored to your interests for convenient pickup. Additionally, our library provides an extensive collection of e-books, e-audiobooks, bestselling magazines, world newspapers, and even streaming music—all accessible from the comfort of your home with your library card.
We invite you to engage with us through in-person or virtual class visits, group tours, and online book clubs. Please be aware that, due to new Library policy, e-bikes, e-scooters, and electronic transportation devices are not permitted inside any NYPL location, except for mobility aids.

Reviews
"The Webster Branch of NYPL is a magnet for the broader community, housing an Adult, Young Adult, and Children’s book collection and hosting wonderful community programs. Established in 1893, as the Webster Free Library, the library was named for Charles B. Webster who donated the building at East 76th Street where the library was originally located. Funds donated to New York by Andrew Carnegie enabled the current site on 78th Street and York Avenue to be constructed. The three-story building is gorgeous and functional. The staff do their best to manage the various demands!"
"Friendly, helpful, very efficient and welcoming as it is a great neighborhood library with their Book Cellar store in the basement level where you can donate books and also buy great used books."
"Webster Library is a wonderful neighborhood resource. It’s great place to browse and see the staff recommendations for books. My favorite thing is being able to request materials online and be notified when they’re ready for pick-up. The staff is friendly and helpful."
"Love this library. Large children’s section with a lot of after-school traffic of children who come in for homework, reading, tutoring, etc. Small adult section but am able to request transfers quickly. Staff are helpful, kind, and quick-moving."
"The librarians here are helpful and sweet. It’s a convenient location, has a nice kids section with tables and chairs, it’s easy to reserve and pick up holds, and you can renew multiple times. You can check out up to 50 books at a time! For a while this location was grab n go so it’s nice to finally be able to browse and sit. Also helps that it’s wheelchair and stroller accessible. (Ramp leading to entrance and elevator inside.)"
