About the Business

Welcome to Derby Hill Bird Observatory
Nestled at 36 Grand View Avenue in Mexico, New York, Derby Hill Bird Observatory is a hidden gem for bird enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. Operated by Onondaga Audubon, this premier bird-watching location is renowned as one of the top hawk watches in the Northeastern United States. Situated on the southeastern corner of Lake Ontario in Oswego County, Derby Hill offers a unique vantage point for observing the awe-inspiring migration of raptors and other bird species.
Each spring, from the beginning of March to the end of May, Derby Hill becomes a bustling hub of avian activity. On average, an impressive 40,000 raptors, including hawks, eagles, and vultures, are counted as they make their northward journey. The site is particularly famous for the breathtaking spectacle of up to 20,000 Broad-winged Hawks observed in a single day in late April. Beyond raptors, visitors can also witness the migration of Snow Geese, Red-winged Blackbirds, Common Grackles, Blue Jays, and Baltimore Orioles.
Derby Hill's strategic location along Lake Ontario's shoreline makes it a crucial stopover for migrating birds. Utilizing thermals to conserve energy, these birds navigate around the lake, concentrating at Derby Hill for optimal viewing opportunities. Two hawk watch lookouts—north and south—are available, used based on wind direction, ensuring the best possible bird-watching experience.
The observatory's sanctuary headquarters, located on a bluff overlooking Lake Ontario, offers not only the main lookout but also access to a network of trails that meander through fields, swamps, and woodlands. These trails, open year-round, provide a chance to explore diverse habitats and encounter local wildlife. A boardwalk through wet areas and a kiosk at Sage Creek Marsh enhance the experience for both novice and seasoned bird watchers.
While spring is the peak season for raptor migration, Derby Hill offers something for visitors in every season. Summer invites botany and butterfly enthusiasts to explore the trails, while fall brings the exciting possibility of spotting Parasitic and Pomarine Jaegers from the bluffs. Winter months, though quieter, still hold the potential for unique wildlife encounters.
Beyond offering a spectacular bird-watching experience, Derby Hill plays a vital role in conservation efforts. Raptors, as top predators, are key indicators of ecosystem health. Consistent counts over the years have contributed valuable data to the Hawk Migration Association of North America (HMANA), aiding in the understanding of population trends and supporting conservation initiatives.
Whether you're a seasoned birder or a casual nature lover, Derby Hill Bird Observatory promises an unforgettable experience immersed in the beauty and wonder of avian migration. Visit us and become part of a community dedicated to appreciating and preserving the natural world. Signs throughout the sanctuary will guide you to parking and lookouts, ensuring a seamless and enjoyable visit.
Discover the magic of migration at Derby Hill Bird Observatory—where nature's wonders unfold before your eyes.
Reviews
"Real nice and relaxing place to watch neat birds."
"Very nice views of Lake Ontario. Great information boards on local birds and it's free. Ignore the private road sign leading to the road going there. Some people take great liberties in posting those signs on roads that taxpayers pay to maintain."
"Great place to enjoy birding, water views and sunsets"
"Great place for hiking, birding, picnicking. Varied habitat accessible. Very pleasant."
"Quiet, almost sacred. Doesn't feel right to utter a single word here. I wouldn't bring a picnic or a family party here- just me and a camera in case I feel moved to take pictures (truly not necessary). Just stand or sit for a few minutes and then respectfully exit as you came, leaving no trace. It's that kind of place. Lots of families live within close proximity and they will appreciate that respect as well."
