About the Business

French Creek Preserve

Welcome to French Creek Preserve, a natural gem nestled in the heart of Clymer, New York. Located on Marks Corners Road, this serene park is part of the most biologically diverse aquatic system in the Northeast, offering visitors a unique opportunity to explore and appreciate nature's wonders.

French Creek Preserve is a biodiversity hotspot within the Upper Allegheny Basin priority conservation landscape. It boasts an incredible array of aquatic habitats, including headwater and mid-reach streams, riparian corridors, and wetlands. These habitats support an impressive 89 species of fish and 28 species of mussels, including the Tippecanoe Darter and the federally endangered clubshell and northern riffleshell mussels. French Creek remains a vital sanctuary for many species that have vanished from other American waterways.

Visitors to the preserve can enjoy more than three-quarters of a mile of creek frontage and explore footpaths along smaller tributaries. A loop trail offers a one-hour hike through diverse habitats, including a floodplain forest, mixed hardwood forest, and creekside bluff. Experience the beauty of sugar and red maples, eastern hemlocks, and vibrant wildflowers such as mountain laurel, trout lily, and Virginia bluebells.

French Creek Preserve is open year-round, providing a perfect escape into nature's tranquility. Please note that during hunting season (October 1 - December 22), written permission is required to hunt on Conservancy lands. For more information on hunting, visit our New York hunting information page.

Directions: From the east, take exit 6 on the Southern Tier Expressway (Route 86/17) near the Village of Sherman; follow NY-76 south for 3.5 miles, turn right onto County Route 4, and continue for 5 miles. From the west, head to the village of French Creek near the Peek 'n' Peak Resort and Conference Center, then follow County Route 4 north for 2 miles. Look for the large wooden sign marking the preserve entrance.

Owned by The Nature Conservancy, French Creek Preserve is part of a network of nearly 1,500 preserves across the United States, protecting wildlife, supporting innovative science, and connecting people to the natural world. Visit us and immerse yourself in the rich biodiversity and historical significance of this extraordinary natural treasure.

"Very beautiful. In the beginning of the trail there is a nice open beautiful field that leads to the forest. The trail eventually rides the creek and there are some good views of the creek. Some of the bridges are in disrepair. If you bring small children be cautious of the bridges."

"Small nature preserve with a parking area. There are no facilities beyond parking, a trail map, and some information on the nature being preserved. There is one loop trail that is 1.1 to 1.2 miles long. The trail varies from former farm fields to wooded area and follows along a low bluff overlooking the creek for part of the walk. The trail is not steep or difficult. Overall, worth a stop for a 30 walk with pretty, if not spectacular scenery. It does not seem like it gets much foot traffic, so it is a good destination for a peaceful stroll."

"Pretty, but could use some maintenance in several spots. Several bridges and walkways were dangerous or impossible to use. No easy way to get down to the water either."
