I have been in New York twenty years barring a few years working abroad and I never found a dentist I liked, so I just started going upstate despite the inconvenience. Finding a doctor in New York isn't great - either they aren't taking new patients or don't accept your insurance or I you change jobs (and insurance) or the doctor leaves a practice and your back on the merry go round.
