Founded by Shiri Reuveni-Ullrich, a speech therapist and avid baker, our bakery was born from the transformative power of baking. Shiri discovered that baking cookies could foster communication and joy among her nonverbal, autistic young adult students, leading to the creation of a space where individuals with disabilities can find their voice and live meaningful, independent lives.
Our new interim home at Rockland Community College in the heart of Nyack provides us with a full-size commercial kitchen and storefront. This exciting transition allows us to expand our team of bakers, increase our production of delicious bread and baked goods, and welcome the community to experience our offerings firsthand.
At Rising Above Bakery, we aim to secure a permanent storefront to further our vision of a community-building enterprise. We are committed to providing young adults with developmental disabilities the opportunity to learn valuable life and work skills, paving the way for an independent and fulfilling life.
We see ourselves at the intersection of three vibrant communities: our dedicated bakers-in-training and their families, our loyal customers, and our supportive friends and neighbors. "My first time at this bakery and I pre-ordered a lot of different things. The maple pecan scones are amazing. Highly recommend. I love home made crackers and if you do too, do not miss the spelt crackers. I also thought the rye bread was top notch. Everything we got was good but those are the highlights. I will be back for sure. Lovely service and great space."
