Glacier Wetlands Natural Area Swope Road, Slippery Rock, PA 16057
About the Business
Nestled on the western edge of Butler County, just north of Zelienople, Glacier Wetlands Natural Area is a haven where nature thrives amidst the backdrop of growing industrial, residential, and commercial development. This picturesque park spans 18 acres of diverse landscapes, from floodplain forests along the Connoquenessing Creek to mesic central forests on steep wooded slopes and upland areas.
Designated as a Biologically Diverse Area (BDA) in the Butler County Natural Heritage Inventory, Glacier Wetlands is a sanctuary for a myriad of plant and animal species. The floodplain forest is dominated by mature Silver Maples and American Basswood, with a rich herbaceous layer that includes Virginia Bluebells, May Apples, and a variety of Trilliums and Violets. The moist, fertile soil here supports an abundance of plant life, creating a vibrant ecosystem.
A popular hiking trail runs parallel to the Connoquenessing Creek, attracting both hikers and fishermen. Kingfishers, Northern Rough-Winged Swallows, and Great Blue Herons are commonly seen patrolling the creek’s waters. This trail is part of the Connoquenessing Valley Heritage Trail system, maintained by Scholar's Run Conservancy, and offers a serene escape into nature.
The northern slopes of the park feature a mature forest community with Red Oak, White Oak, American Basswood, Tulip Tree, and Sugar Maple. The upland areas boast a magnificent grove of Chestnut Oak, with additional hiking trails ranging from 2 to 5 miles. Wildlife such as deer, squirrels, turkeys, and Red-Tailed Hawks are frequent visitors to these trails.
A small two-acre park within the area, located on Halstead Blvd in Zelienople, provides amenities including a parking area, picnic shelter, and stone step access to the Connoquenessing Creek, leading to a small beach popular with fishermen, canoeists, and kayakers. Additional trails connect to the new Jackson Township Park, expanding the recreational opportunities for visitors.
The 18-acre hillside and streambank area is bisected by Creek Road, a scenic dirt township road. A walk along this undeveloped road offers beautiful views of the creek valley and lovely spring wildflowers. The area also includes an old logging road for a short hillside walk.
Adjacent to privately owned glacial landscapes, including Tamarack Lake and wetlands, Glacier Wetlands is part of a larger natural corridor. This area is a favorite picnic spot and canoe/kayak launch site, with ongoing development to enhance visitor experiences.
Rock Point, located at the scenic confluence of Connoquenessing Creek and the Beaver River in Lawrence County, is another highlight. This 100-acre forested area, also designated as a BDA, features steep sandstone cliffs, white water rapids, and evidence of glaciation. The mixed hardwood forest and rich herbaceous layer, including large White Trillium, provide a habitat for the endangered Indiana Bat and rare spotted salamander.
With easy access to the creek via a canoe/kayak boat ramp and hiking trails, Glacier Wetlands Natural Area offers a tranquil retreat for nature enthusiasts. Whether you’re hiking, fishing, picnicking, or simply enjoying the diverse flora and fauna, this natural gem promises a memorable outdoor experience.

"Nice conservatory and wetland area. Not really much to see but, at least there are places like this that do care for nature still. There is no parking there either."
