About the Business

CSKT Bison Range

CSKT Bison Range, located at 58355 Bison Range Road in Charlo, Montana, is a park and tourist attraction owned and managed by the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes. Established in 1908 by the U.S. Federal Government on land taken without tribal consent, the Bison Range is home to a herd of bison that are descendants of the Reservation herd started by Tribal members in the 1800s. Thanks to the Bison Range Restoration legislation passed by Congress, the range is now under CSKT stewardship. Visitors can enjoy the scenic drive through the range, but should be aware of road closures for culvert repairs. For updates on road conditions, call 406-644-2211 or email BisonRange@cskt.org. Experience the beauty and history of the Bison Range, a place where the vision of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes comes to life.

"Visiting the National Bison Range was an unforgettable experience. The sprawling landscapes and the majestic sight of bison roaming freely were awe-inspiring. The well-maintained facilities and informative visitor center provided great insights into the history and ecology of the area. Staff were friendly and knowledgeable, enhancing our visit with fascinating stories and facts. The opportunity for wildlife photography was exceptional, with not just bison but also deer, elk, and various bird species. This visit was educational, serene, and visually stunning, a must-see for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts."

"Enjoyed a leisurely drive on the longer of the two loops through the Bison Range, beginning about 1:30pm. $20/car. Just a few sightings on the first half, but a few gatherings of bison towards the end of the almost 2-hour drive. No getting out of the car. First section was a one-way road, then it was divided, though no visible markers. Just the kind staff gentleman who was making rounds backed up to inform us. A pleasant way to see the bison. Saw a few deer as well, but no elk on our afternoon trek. Highly recommend if you’ve never seen these beautiful creatures outside a zoo."

"1) If you're really afraid of heights it might not be for you . It's a steep (at times) ride up a mountain 2) you'll definitely need a car wash afterwards. 3) it's a gravel road, so if you're picky about your car......4) It's INCREDIBLE! WORTH my fear of heights and we saw plenty of bison and an elk. Do it!"

"Stop at the visitor center for $10 admission, and spend some time with the exhibits. Important history lessons. On the drive are gorgeous views! Saw snakes, birds, bison, elk, deer, and antelope. SO worth the 2 hour drive for us to get there. Take the long loop - you won't regret it!"

"what an excellent place to go, this place is very well-maintained. The price was very reasonable, and just $10 per car. We had a great time we took the hour long drive, and we were able to see Buffalo, some elk, and pronghorn antelope. It was really cool just to see them pop up out of nowhere. The terrain is beautiful and it is well worth the time and effort it took to find this place. You will not regret driving out here, it is just a real special place."
