"Ask for “The Usual” There’s no way words can convey the Colonial Barbers experience. It must be lived to be appreciated. Imagine Floyd’s of Mayberry mixed with Jerry Clower, Minnie Pearl, and a pinch of Will Rogers. Such unparalleled wisdom just doesn’t exist anywhere but within a genuine old-fashioned Small-Town Southern Barber Shop. The shop is as it always has been - littered with outdoor magazines and Western Horseman journals on the rack, fresh-cut hair on the floor, and good ol’ boys contributing to the friendly banter as they patiently wait their turn in the chair. Throughout the day, the conversation turns where it may - twisting and turning unpredictably as patrons of all ages and backgrounds with a full range of opinions and lifetimes of stories come and go. Topics range from weather and local hearsay to politics and religion - and are frequently peppered with yarns and harmless wisecracks. Remarks are genuine and to the point, but not rude. And please, no politically correct language, thank you. Everyone is welcome in the shop, no matter their perspectives; though the odds of changing 60+ year-old positions on politics, religion, or how to correct an unruly child are pretty slim. Speaking of children - mine have grown up going to the shop with dad and have always been rewarded for their good manners with a the sucker of their choice. Not once have they required a reprimand or even a corrective glance in their direction; as they were raised with the understanding that children are to behave, sit still, and “are better seen and not heard” while the grown-ups are talking. Cash has always been and will likely always be accepted. Tips are greatly appreciated. Credit card machines, PayPal, Apple Pay, etc, with their surcharges and restrictive covenants just don’t make sense here in the shop. And Government-Mandated FaceMasks are out of the question. If the phone rings, it will be politely answered by either Steve or Debbie. The phone always interrupts someone’s haircut, so the polite thing to do is to keep the conversation as short as possible so you can get back to business - the business of cutting hair. The haircut, just like the setting, is traditional. You need to let them how you like it the first time or two you’re in the chair, then say “just like last time.” Regular customers simply sit down without a word and get just what they’re looking for - a quality haircut and a slice of the time-honored philosophy of a small-town barber. The expertise in those hands only comes from dedication to the art as well as the practice of tens of thousands of haircuts over the past several decades. Steve and Debbie take their time and do a good job. It’s quite apparent from the smile on their lips, twinkle in their eyes, and always-just-right haircut that they really do enjoy their jobs. If The Good Lord’s willing and the creek don’t rise, Steve and Debbie will be at their chairs Tuesday through Friday 9:00-5:30 and Saturday 9:00-1:00. Listen… please trust me, there is so much more I could say and explain, but this place really is great. It’s better than great. It’s a throwback to gentler, nobler times when we love dour neighbors rather than simply tolerating them. IF you’re a person (young or old) with the ability to sit, discuss, reflect and appreciate opinions that may not align with your own without melting or feeling sorry for yourself, you’ll be just fine. Trust me, there’s no better place to bring a well-behaved child, parent, or spouse than Colonial Barbers."

"If I could retell the whole experience to explain fully on here I would, but there is not enough space provided. I tried. so here is just some quick words and such I Would use to describe this place kinda dingy, super dated feel, non hair related magazines everywhere , my husband called before hand with questions, no mention of not accepting card, cash only. (would have been a GREAT time to mention also maybe don't hang up that quick but this wasn't as bad as the the actual experience there) LOTS of belittling remarks toward customer and child and etc. questionable blending, dated cut style, didn't give what was shown or asked for, dated hair knowledge and passive aggressive questioning/comments about what was being asked (and paid) for. (and on a simple normal cut at that). passive aggressive attitude and remarks in general. non friendly. especially not kid friendly. shaky hands. Not wearing masks and was coughing. I would rate this hair cut a 6 or 7 out of 10. good enough cut, not excellent, almost satisfactory. Listen..... please trust me, there is so much more I could say and explain but this place really is not great. We gave ZERO problems and still even tipped, we left there no issues at all but the experience just wasn't top notch or satisfactory. The lady (Debbie) vibes weren't bad and she seemed quite pleasant but we actually only dealt with the male (steve?, I presume) and it was not at all acceptable to return to. not the cut or the abrasive attitude for no reason at all. mostly due to the experience. like I said the cut is ok for the price($15) but you can get a more quality cut and better service somewhere else for the same or close. IF you're a Much older white more republican adult then maybe this place is for you. if not I promise you are better off somewhere else, especially if you are bringing a child. those are certainly the vibes here."

"Well I’m in Sherman for a week before I travel to Ireland for the Christmas holidays. I needed a hair cut and used Google to check for barbers. Colonial didn’t show up immediately and I forgot I had used them years ago. I didn’t want to look like I just had a haircut as it is cold and damp in Ireland this time of year. I told Debby what I wanted and she did a fine job she asked me if I wanted it a little tighter and she adjusted it to my satisfaction. The shop is. Clean bright and tidy. No 10 minute haircuts they take their time to satisfy you. Tuesday to Friday 9AM to 5:30PM. Sat 9AM to 1PM. Closed Sunday. If you are a male. Nothing like a Barber to fix your hair not a hair saloon. They are specialists at Colonial Barber Shop. 1419 W Houston St, Sherman TX"
