"I am a senior guy who many years ago had seven years of piano lessons focused on classical music. Now retired, I wanted to recover my basic keyboard skills, but this time learn to play blues, jazz, other popular rhythms and cord and progressions. I also hoped to learn how to play by ear. After searching many teachers and music programs locally and on the internet, I had the good fortune to find J D Rouillard with Cottonwood Heights Piano and Music Lessons. We immediately developed rapport and focussed on what I wanted, and what I needed to learn. J D’s skills as a pianist are motivating and inspiring. His love of music is contagious. J D’s style is very unlike my childhood European concert pianist teacher who would bang the keys with her pencil if I made mistakes. Sometimes she would slouch back in her chair and mutter under her breath in an Italian accent, “Stupid children, stupid children.” No wonder, as I started lessons again I played with apprehensive tension. J D is helping me move past that, helping me gently guide my old teacher, who also helped me learn many valuable skills, away from my shoulder and back to her grave where she rests in peace. J D is a rare find among many teachers with more rigid and traditional styles. I have also observed his impressive ability to engage kids. For highly motivated youth, who love music more than their tablets, he would be a great choice to guide them in a positive non-critical manner, focussing on success at each step. I am also confident he can teach the foundations of classical music with much less risk of students feeling overwhelmed and dropping out. Based on my experience, for the adults out there with some basic music background, who want to learn to play fun music for themselves and others, J D is an excellent choice.
