Your dentist canceled a procedure to pull a tooth, for their own reasons. You try to remind them that you will now need an extension of your pain medication, specifically because they canceled the procedure. What do you hear? “I don’t care what I promised! – you wrote a bad review!” this is said with the dentist actually trembling with anger. Far from angry yourself, you are more confused and curious as to why the dentist is losing their temper. Philosopher Sartre in his play Huis Clos suggested that hell is other people. Perhaps he never encountered a dentist with an anger management problem. The dentist’s idea here seems to be that if you write a bad review you should have a toothache as punishment. Is this sadism?
