"In August of 2022, Margaret had part of her Liver and all of her Spleen removed. 20 months later she is too stubborn to slow down. She is almost 15, so doesn't get around the best, but she is still happy, and that's all thanks to the amazing folks at this hospital."

"I wrote a negative review of my experience here and they removed it from their reviews. My dog was only 3 when I had to put her down. After countless vet visits and driving from out of town we were told ISU was "the best". After weeks of back and forth hospital stays, a surgery, multiple medications- I bluntly asked over the phone if they had any idea what was wrong with her, why they weren't communicating with each other to game plan. Every time we came into the hospital was like the first time they had ever met my dog. She spent a WEEK there after a surgery. She had been referred by multiple other vets. The last time we brought her to the hospital was in the middle of the night from Iowa City and that vet called and when we arrived they said they didn't know we were coming and weren't prepared for us. They need help with putting their heads together as doctors and not having patients have to repeat information 90x that is documented."

"Our sweet shihtzu suffered thermal burns at the hands of her (licensed!) dog groomer due to a kennel dryer. We took our shihtzu to our local vet, but the extent of our pups burns required a referral to the wonderful and knowledgeable folks at ISU Small Animal Hospital. This was our first experience here, and we weren't sure what to expect. All we knew going in was that if the experts here couldn't help us -- no one could. Our pup was taken in right away and from October 15th through December 4th we we received some of the best, informed care at ISU Small Animal Hospital. Dr. Tsoi and her student Ashley's names will remain part of our household for years to come. Our shihtzu is alive because of them and so many others. Our shihtzu not only survived because of this staff, but she is thriving and back to her usual spunky self. We give this review as individuals who are blessed enough to be able to consent to live saving care for our pup, but also aren't able to pay it off right away. There are options, and care like this is truly priceless for our fuzzy family members. Our stay was longer than what I hope most of you reading this review will have, but know that if you're making daily visits for months like we were, the sweet presence of the ladies at the front desk will make some scary situations easier. I've never been met with so much compassion. Karen the Client Relations Manager is a true animal lover and a gem of a human being. The folks at ISU Small Animal Hospital saw my husband and I at our tearful worst, and they celebrated with us when it was our pups last visit to the hospital. I cannot say enough good things. The attached photo is the life of the pup they saved on the day that she was officially discharged. They saved our hearts in the process. We are forever grateful that we did not have to say goodbye to our 2 year old girl."

"My sister used this place several years ago and had a great experience but another sister used them (with our other sister's recommendation) and had an awful experience. Between misdiagnosis and prescription that led to another complication that resulted in her dogs body shutting down and a "math mistake" they revealed after they put him down(they wanted them to pay more) they were unprofessional, and overpriced and would not admit they made a mistake. It was as simple as missing a warm dry nose and saying it was just a muscle strain. They were very condescending and ignorant. Do not use them unless you want to lose your pet. RIP sweet puppy"

"We absolutely appreciated our time with Hixon-Lied. They were absolutely amazing from the very start. From reception, emergency services, to internal medicine we and our pup were treated with compassion and respect. They were completely honest with us in her chances of survival with IMHA and the cost of any procedures. When they knew our sweet girl had the more severe case of this terrible disease, they called us immediately, knowing it was a 2 hour drive for us, and knowing we would want to be there for her when she left us. Their compassion for trying to save the lives of our babies goes above and beyond any normal vet care. We truly hope we never have to see them again however, we know that if one of our furbabies needs emergency services again, we wouldn't go anywhere else."
