"I was arrested and charged with a Class D felony, amongst other charges, at age 18. I am currently 23, writing this review 5 years later. I wanted to make sure to post my review so that maybe some other kids who are 18 or 19 know to IMMEDIATELY request a change of council if Karen Peters is your Public Defender. Here are the 2 things that happened in my experience with Peters that makes me feel this way. 1. The police never read me my Miranda Rights before questioning me. After telling Peters that I was questioned without being read my rights, her response was “Well, they don’t have to.. unless they question you,” which they did. I tried reiterating this to Peters, but she was uninterested in exploring that option (even though she said out-loud with her own mouth, ‘unless they question you,’ which they did) to get my charges reduced. 2. One of my charges was a Class D felony. This was the main charge that I was worried about, as I had just turned 18 and did not want to be a convicted felon for my entire adult life. While one may think that this is self-explanatory, Karen Peters suggested that I submit a plea of GUILTY to the felony. As soon as she suggested this awful idea, my mother and I understood that Karen Peters was not trying to help me. My guess is that she wanted to take advantage of my “young and dumb” mind and get me to plead guilty to a felony so she could be done with me. She suggested that I plead guilty VERY shortly after being appointed as my Public Defender. She had ZERO interest in helping me in any way at all. I would be on my 5th year of being a felon if I had listened to Karen Peters. I would have never been able to vote if I had listened to Karen Peters. I would be labeled a life-long criminal and would have an extremely difficult time finding a good job, since I would have to say that I’m a felon. Not listening to Karen Peters quite LITERALLY saved my life in a sense. I would suggest most of you to do the same If you find yourself in a situation, PLEASE do yourself a favor and request a different attorney."
