About the Business

Wailua River State Park, located in Kapaʻa, Hawaii, is a beautiful park and tourist attraction that offers a variety of activities for visitors to enjoy. The park features a lush river valley with a riverboat cruise that takes visitors to Fern Grotto, a unique fern-covered cave in a tropical garden. Visitors can also take in scenic vistas of the stunning ‘Opaeka‘a Falls and Wailua Falls, as well as the picturesque Wailua River Valley.
The park is also home to the Wailua Complex of Heiau, a National Historic Landmark that showcases the remains of heiau (places of worship), pu‘uhonua (places of refuge), and birthstones from ancient Hawaii. Visitors can also enjoy picnicking in the riverside coconut grove, as well as dining and gift shopping at Wailua Marina.
Before visiting the park, it is recommended to monitor local surf and weather reports. Additionally, visitors should note any updates or closures, such as the water pump being down at the Keawa’ula Section of Ka’ena Point State Park or the road repairs at Kōkeʻe State Park.
Reviews
"Okay, it is a waterfall, but you are so far away it is terrible. Perhaps you can usually get closer, but the sidewalk was closed due to construction."
"We didn't have any real access to the waterfall. Pics are from a limited view. Nice area. The road is very very narrow, so please be careful."
"Pretty cool place to visit right off the main road. Take the stairs to the top. There you will find an old Asian cemetery. Pretty views of the river below, too."
"We launched our kayak here that we rented for the day from Wailua Kayak Adventures, and it was an easy launch. Then we rowed up the river a couple of miles and got off to do the Waterfall hike (muddy). What beautiful sights we saw, including an array of birds and ducks. An experience of a lifetime!"
"We’ve been here in July and February. When we came in July the hike to the falls wasn’t bad and the crossings had little water. However, when you get to the “falls” it is really a trickle. I’m February, after a big storm, the hike wasn’t for the faint of heart. Mud up to your shin, wadding through a river that goes to your waist and lots of rocks to climb. However, when you get to the falls, it is gushing and quite impressive. You couldn’t really swim in it like you can in July though. We also kayaked to the fern grotto. After rain, it is also a mess to undock and hike to from a kayak. There was about a foot and half climb up to mud to get to the paved trail. There was a little trickle fall and the fern grotto. If you’re already out kayaking, you might as well stop. We rented kayaks from Bring Me a Kayak and I highly recommend them."
