"If I could rate myself as a dental patient, I'd be 2, maybe 3 stars. I grew up poor-- er, financially substandard-- and teeth were luxury bones that didn't get regular professional attention. Due to the shame and discomfort I associate with dental exams, I'm one of those terrible people who wait until it's a genuine emergency before even trying to book a visit. Alas, that emergency for me was today. After a week of ever-increasing agony from a tooth that broke long ago and had finally become infected, I called West Hawaii Dental on the off-chance that I could get seen. Serendipitously, they had had a cancellation and were able to get me in for just an hour later, even though I was a new patient. The receptionist was incredibly kind, friendly and patient with me while I stumbled through the paperwork and tried to produce my insurance information. I was unable to find my card, but she tried every way imaginable to verify it anyway. While she sat on hold with Delta, the sweet and sympathetic hygenist whisked me back for a quick x-ray. The dentist took one look and concluded that the tooth needed to be extracted, which did not surprise me. He got me an estimate immediately, and honestly it was much lower than I expected. I agreed and he got to work. The extraction process took about an hour and he was efficient, funny and compassionate the whole time. The emergency visit, x-ray, two numbing injections and the procedure itself cost a little over $300 (without insurance), which I thought was very reasonable. I am so very grateful for the treatment I received today at West Hawaii Dental. I have a few cavities the dentist noticed that will need fillilng at a later date, and I am looking forward to booking with them for regular cleanings too-- once I find my stupid insurance card, that is. Thank you to the entire staff for your professionalism and flexibility, you far exceeded the expectations of this 2-star patient!"
