Perhaps you would have known you had court had you not been avoiding receiving your mail, because I assure you that you received multiple appearance date confirmation notices from him in addition to what you received from the court. Also, .don't be upset with the man wanting to be compensated for services rendered. The work isn't over once you discharge an attorney, there is additional work needed in order to get the case to a point where it could be passed to your new attorney without having to pay to do the work over again. Otherwise, your new attorney would have been much more expensive, so he actually did you a favor there.
