The laboratory test method detects and quantifies Acetaminophen Protein Adducts in human serum using HPLC-EC, with a sample requirement of 0.5 mL of serum. Results are reported in nmol/mL APAP-CYS and the reference interval for APAP Cysteine is <0.16 nmol/mL.
Values between 0.16 - 0.5 nmol/mL are seen in healthy individuals who have taken acetaminophen without liver injury, while a level of >/= 1.00 nmol/mL is considered the "toxicity" threshold. The results should be interpreted in conjunction with other clinical factors and are not intended for sole clinical diagnosis or patient management decisions. The APAP Cysteine assay was developed by ATD and has not been FDA approved. ATD is regulated under CLIA for high-complexity testing. Acetaminophen-cysteine adducts are a specific biomarker of acetaminophen exposure validated in research.
