About the Business
Fort Union National Monument, located in Watrous, New Mexico, is a historic tourist attraction that showcases the adobe walled ruins of the largest 19th century military fort in the region. "Beautiful scenery with an easy 1.5 mile walk. You can still see ruins from a distance in the parking lot and there is information indoors as well. Pretty chilly out with a little snow on the ground early March 2024. Sun was shining and there is information about these historic ruins along the trail that explains what each of the buildings were used for when they were functional. Would love to go again and spend a few hours to take it all in."
"We visited on 12/20/2023 and had the monument to ourselves. The rangers were friendly and shared a bit of the history. We were able to walk around what remains of the fort. The visitor center was nice and informative. Our kids enjoyed it quite a bit! Entrance is free."
"Interesting place, being preserved, informational signage along trail, actually on portions of the Sante Fe Trail, nice Visitor's Center, passport stamp available. Beautiful bronze statues in museum."
"The whole tour was great. Guides were excited to share their knowledge and impressed with the number of Diné students participating. New knowledge was accumulated. Not only did the guides give a tour but went out of their way to do a fun real-life activity with the group with 95% active participation. Everyone including myself looked forward to the card drawing at every stop and ending with 3 pops. See you next trip!"
"Be sure to visit the office first to take a brochure/map of the trail. No snakes on any of the trails I took luckily but they do warn you could encounter one. It's pretty windy in Aug and also very sunny but it was a nice walk around. Lots to see and intake, souvenir shop also located inside the office and restrooms too. Be sure to take your time and bring covered shoes, there's cactus in the grass too."
