About the Business

Arizona Falls

Arizona Falls is a unique institution located at 5802 East Indian School Road in Phoenix, Arizona, United States. This 20-foot drop along the Arizona Canal between 56th and 58th streets serves as both a neighborhood attraction and a hydroelectric plant. Visitors can explore the intersection of technology, artistry, and natural wonder as they venture across a pedestrian footbridge towards the viewing platform. Here, amidst the flowing water, historic gears and hydroelectric equipment can be seen.

The project at Arizona Falls is part of a larger initiative along the Valley’s canals, with over 80 miles of paved paths developed by cities in collaboration with SRP. The site also features the Phoenix Art Commission’s “WaterWorks at Arizona Falls” project, designed by renowned Boston artists Lajos Héder and Mags Harries, which highlights the history of the landmark.

Since the late 1800s, Arizona Falls has been a popular spot for community recreation, picnics, and viewing. The hydroelectric plant at the site was the first in Phoenix when it opened in 1902, and was later rebuilt in 1911. After being shut down in 1950, the plant was restored and reopened to the public in 2003, now providing enough electricity to power 150 homes.

Generating up to 750 kilowatts of clean, renewable electricity, Arizona Falls plays a significant role in SRP’s renewable energy portfolio. Visitors can also enjoy activities such as boating, swimming, fishing, and relaxing at the lakes surrounding the falls. Learn more about hydropower and other clean energy sources at this educational and scenic tourist attraction.

"Very interesting the way the water flows in sheets and is free falling like waterfalls! There are paths to walk around the area too amongst the waterfalls!"

"Great spot to take the kids for a walk. It was very clean and interesting. There’s numbered signs with history of the system for you to read."

"A hidden gem on the Crosscut canal, this hydro power station doubles as a beautiful water feature. You can actually walk down a flight of stairs to stand amid multiple waterfalls. Go around sunset for a potentially spectacular view."
