About the Business

Zur Kate German Restaurant

Zur Kate German Restaurant, located at 4815 East Main Street in Mesa, Arizona, brings a taste of authentic German cuisine to the United States. Originally owned by Günther and Irene Krause, who operated the original Zur Kate in Hamburg, Germany, the restaurant has been serving up delicious German dishes for 16 years. Günther, a Master Butcher, and Irene, trained in culinary arts by Herr Keimer, brought their expertise to Mesa in 1983 to open Zur Kate German Restaurant.

Horst Schlembach, a Bavarian native, joined the Krause's at Zur Kate shortly after they opened and eventually took over as the new owner after 23 years of working with them. The name Zur Kate translates to "to the old smokehouse," reflecting the restaurant's commitment to recreating the cozy and welcoming atmosphere of a traditional German guesthouse.

At Zur Kate, guests are treated like friends, with a focus on cordiality and friendliness. Whether you're craving schnitzel, bratwurst, or sauerbraten, Zur Kate German Restaurant is the place to go for an authentic taste of Germany in Mesa, Arizona.

"Great German beer on tap. Great food and cozy family style atmosphere. If you like good German food and drink- this is the place. One of our favorite restaurants in Arizona--reminds us of a local restaurant in Schhonau am Konigssee, Bavaria."

"Delicious schnitzel and bratwurst! The food is excellent, but the menu is limited to a small (but tasty) selection of schnitzel and sausages! Wait staff were friendly and fast, and very helpful! Though do be warned, that there is often a wait to get into this small restaurant! Definitely come a few minutes before they open to be able to get a spot for dinner!!"

"We have been going to Zur Kate for years for the authentic German food, beer, atmosphere, and service. Recommend the Schnitzel. My favorite is the Ramen but the Weiner is good too. They also have weekly specials that they only serve on Friday and Saturday evenings. Prost!!!"

"I don't know if this place is under new management, had a new cook or what happened to this place. Last time I ate here was in April 2023, I ordered the Weiner schnitzel, it was the size of a large pork chop & crispy like a chicken fried steak. This time around it was not as crispy or flavorful. It was like a ham steak with shake & bake on it. Texture just wasn't right. The potato dumpling had something completely different on the inside than the last time I ordered them. The sauerkraut was not sour or flavorful for that matter. The potato salad had way too much lemon in it & was more sour than the 'kraut. The strudel was tasty. I thought this place was unique because of the staff outfits for the theme of the place. Now the staff wear jeans & a t-shirt with their logo on it. They still play music that is appropriate for the place,"
