About the Business

Elkhorn Tavern, located in Garfield, Arkansas, United States, is a historic landmark reconstructed based on photos of the original Cox's tavern from the 1880s. The south fireplace and foundations are original, and the building is listed on the National Register of Historic Landmarks. Built in 1833 by William Reddick and Samuel Burks, the tavern served as a stop for the Overland Stage and was a place of "abundant good cheer" before the Civil War. During the war, it became a field hospital and headquarters for the Federal army. The tavern was burned by Confederate guerrillas in 1863 but was rebuilt by Joseph Cox after the war. Today, the structure has been restored to its wartime appearance and features two monuments dedicated to the soldiers who fought at the battlefield. Visit Elkhorn Tavern to step back in time and learn about the rich history of this historic site.
