"I showed up for my appointment and was turned away because I didn’t want to put a credit card on file with them to charge. When the insurance pays them, you don’t get a statement or a request for payment. They just charge your card without notice. I didn’t feel comfortable with that and I don’t know of any other medical facility that operates that way. I read the response from the owner and was shocked. I have been a nurse for over 20 years and have never heard of this type of billing before. It is not common in the medical field. For most medical claims, a patient presents for services. A claim is filed with insurance which goes through certain steps to determine the amount of the bill based on agreements between the insurance company and the provider, including what kind of coverage the employer negotiated. Subtract any deductibles or copays due. Then the health care provider presents with a bill to the patient. If you don’t pay your bill, it possibly can be negotiated with the billing department as far as a payment plan or they could turn it over to collections. Now, some providers can estimate what the bill will be for the patient and may choose to collect that upfront. I see this happen in dentist offices. But you still receive a statement of services billed for, estimated insurance payment, and likely amount the patient is responsible for. But never have I ever handed my credit card information to a medical facility. Their policy is highly questionable and certainly not common. I challenge them to submit any medical facility in the Kansas City Metro that specializes in counseling with such a policy."
