"Super chill training environment, however, training partners and coaches alike can pump up the intensity if you prefer that. Everyone is very friendly especially to newcomers. Classes are large, and some people can find this daunting. However, once everyone realizes you are there to stay it's all one big family. I've gotten job offers, been invited to parties, and made some great friends. In terms of instruction, when I first started it was Coach Erick. He was excellent. After he left Josh taught most classes. He is excellent. When someone else teaches a class (Brian, Travis, Dave) they are excellent. Most visitors are not up to par with the belts we have and this is not at all a slight to them, but more of a a testament to the high level of jiu jitsu taught at JM. And while Josh is definitely competitive and expects attention and effort he is aware of your life outside of BJJ. Warm ups are quick and to the point. You are not chastised for showing up late or sitting out for a roll. You can very much choose the pace of your jiu-jitsu journey at JM."

"I have been training at JM Modern JJ for five and half years. I Started as a whitebelt with Professor Josh, now I am a purple belt. JM Modern Jiu-Jitsu is a very welcoming oriented gym. The diversity of individuals that train at JM all come from every walks of life. Some of my best friends that I would not ever would have given a chance to know if I have not ever started jiu-jitsu, I now call my brothers. The staff and the blackbelt professors are exceptional, and the kids classes are very fundamental, and fun.The mats are always CLEAN before and after class, and there is a bunch of mat space. There are showers incase you decide to hit up a lunch class and then head back to work after. There is never a boring moment when training. JM Modern Jiu-Jitsu is my second family. I can honestly say I love this group I train with and would be there for them at a moments notice."

"I've trained BJJ for 12 years and had 5 home gyms due to moves, closures, etc. I moved to BR and trained at JM Modern for 9 months and have to say I was pretty disappointed. I had to pause my training last year due to a pretty serious injury that happened at an open mat. (Not the fault of my rolling partner or the gym. These things happen.) This is when I found out that JMM is *very* strict about their 2-month cancellation policy. I have never been at a gym before where the owners insist on collecting two full months of membership fees when someone is off the mats long-term due to a rolling injury, especially when that student is expecting to resume training afterwards. Email and voicemail asking to pause my membership were ignored, messages left with staff for Josh were not returned. So if you get injured, just be aware that you'll have to pay JMM an additional $300 to pause your training. Not cool at all, especially with all the medical bills coming in. I've now had surgery (two level ACDF) and am on the road to recovery. I love BJJ and will continue to train as long as my body lets me, but I will be continuing my journey elsewhere. Also worth mentioning, this was the least personal interaction I've experienced with the professors at any gym I've trained at. I don't think either of the main instructors even knew my name. Maybe it is because the classes are so large, but after 9 months of consistent training and participating in open mats here I expected more. All that said, it's not a bad gym. The facility is great, the instructors are all very skilled, and you will definitely learn quality bjj here. But don't expect much personal help from the instructors and don't believe whomever tries to get you to sign the contract by saying that JMM makes exceptions to bad rules. [Added in response to Josh's reply: Josh, I don't know if you're being flippant or just trying to mislead anyone who looks at these reviews, but you and I have certainly not had ANY conversations before class, much less long ones. You must be thinking of someone else.]"
